Misery is a popular indie game with over 250,000 sales set in a post-apocalyptic version of mid-century Russia.
When I was tasked with creating some music for it, I began researching what people actually listened to in the Soviet Union after WWII. That’s when I discovered “bone records” or “ribs”: smuggled Western songs that were secretly cut onto discarded X-ray films using scavenged, improvised record-cutters. These fragile bootlegs circulated through an underground market and became a striking symbol of Soviet musical counterculture.
My track is used in a section of the game called the Sirzez. This is an area that players frequently visit to trade with NPCs to sell their excess goods and upgrade their gear.
This is the full track that plays on loop in the Sirzez. I aimed to recreate the degraded, poor quality of the Bone Records to make it sound more authentic.
This was just a quick recording I got with my M.U.S.E. Swing band. We didn't have much time to rehearse but it was great to hear it in person.
